Si l'on se réfère à la signification chimique, on peut dire qu'un aérosol est un système colloïdal dont le milieu de dispersion est un gaz, la phase dispersée pouvant être un solide (cas d'une fumée) ou un liquide (cas d'un brouillard), et l'on distingue entre les aérosols vrais mono-dispersés constitués de micelles de diamètre inférieur à 1 micron, et les aérosols polydispersés [...] Les premiers sont homogènes et stables; les seconds sont instables et les dimensions des micelles sont hétérogènes.
